The Mental Body

The Mental Body is the aspect of ourselves that we most often think of as “me”.  It is the place of our thoughts, memories and cognition.  It is the place that recognizes patterns, interprets information and guides us on how to respond, through action, to what is happening in the environment.  Because of its immense power it is one of humanity’s greatest gifts and most useful tools for creating a healthy and fulfilling life.  However, because the mind is such a powerful and adaptive tool, we also have a tendency to try to it to solve every problem.

Whereas the mind is a fantastic problem solver on the cognitive level, the mind cannot by itself solve the problems often created by the mind such as anxiety, depression or excessive rumination.  Nor can it by itself resolve problems that live outside of cognitive reasoning. Such problems may include deep negative thought patterns created in childhood, emotional regulation issues, addictive or self-sabotaging behaviors, grief, soul-loss, and unresolved traumas, such as PTSD.

Holistic Psychotherapy seeks to harness the extraordinary power of the mind to be a creative force of healing and change.  Through accessing the wisdom of the Mental Body we are able to recognize what is not working, take in the information given to us by our other aspects, and call upon our imagination to create viable, integrated, long-term solutions.
